I’m constantly amazed at how petty and unforgiving the human heart is. Jesus said “”For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” (Matthew 6:14-15) Sobering words from the one who will judge our eternal soul. I’m amazed because although each of us is imperfect and flawed, we still hold others to standards we ourselves can not attain. We expect God to forgive us of our many sins and shortcomings but refuse to grant mercy and forgiveness to anyone who has even looked at us funny or said an unkind thing to us. I hear it all the time “Didn’t you see it? She was glaring at me the whole service”. Or “I don’t like that man. He has a ‘spirit’ about him” . We are petty and unforgiving and completely blind to our own faults. In every church there are those who walk around praising God for his forgiveness, as if they deserved every blessing God has to pour out on them, but they can’t forgive a sister or brother in the lord for not being friendly enough on Sunday. Or maybe it’s because they heard some gossip about that person and now their perception of him or her is forever tarnished with hate. Hate…. now that’s a strong word. Is it? The Bible doesn’t give room for a middle ground between love and hate. You either love them or you don’t. I know it’s very comfortable for us to rest on the belief that “I don’t hate them” and we’ve all said it. But what we are really saying is “I don’t love them”.

We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love his brother abides in death. Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. (1 John 3:14-15)

John’s point is simple ” If it’s not love, it’s hate”. We are so critical and hateful to people we don’t understand. Hateful of people who don’t act the way we think they should and critical of everyone who may disagree with us or not bow to our wishes. Don’t get me wrong. I am quite aware that not all believers are hateful jerks bent on world conquest, but those who walk in love are few and we should be ashamed. Let me ask you something. Do you find forgiveness easy? I mean on the things that come and go day to day. Does it flow from you or do you struggle to not be critical? Do you struggle to be at peace with all men? If so you have a problem. You see, love is the Holy Spirit’s greatest gift and if you don’t have it you are not walking with Him. If love doesn’t flow from you freely, you are not bearing fruit and you are in danger of being cut down. I’m not talking about every time you get angry or the once in a while time it is difficult. Even an apple tree has a bad year. I’m talking about if you constantly struggle with unforgiveness, or a critical heart.

Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good. (Romans 12:9)

If you do, you are a hypocrite. Whenever I go to church with someone I can’t even talk to because of some grudge I’m holding against them or some ill feelings I’m harboring towards them, I am being a hypocrite and that’s sin.

“You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, ‘Never murder. Whoever murders will answer for it in court.’ But I can guarantee that whoever is angry with another believer will answer for it in court. Whoever calls another believer an insulting name will answer for it in the highest court. Whoever calls another believer a fool will answer for it in hellfire. “So if you are offering your gift at the altar and remember there that another believer has something against you, leave your gift at the altar. First go away and make peace with that person. Then come back and offer your gift. (Matthew 5:21-24)

If you are on the receiving end of the hate and bitterness, understand this. You will be rewarded if it is because of your love for God that they are treating you this way.

Blessed are you when people hate you, avoid you, insult you, and slander you because you are committed to the Son of Man. Rejoice then, and be very happy! You have a great reward in heaven. That’s the way their ancestors treated the prophets. (Luke 6:22-23)

“Blessed are you when people avoid you in church, when they slander you and talk behind your back”. Jesus is talking about religious people who hang out in churches. You wont know them because they have a mark on their forehead or because they dress funny. You will know them because of the fruit their lives are producing. That fruit is death and destruction, pain and bitterness. These are the people who destroy lives and churches, never able to forgive, always looking to cause trouble, gossips, slanderers, back-biters.

We should see this the way God does. Love is the ultimate expression of who He is and the same way we want our children to be like us, so God want’s us to be like Him. Jesus said ”I’m giving you a new commandment: Love each other in the same way that I have loved you”. (John 13:34) Notice it’s a command. Not a suggestion, not a goal, not a high and mighty dream.

“What must I do?” Go to your brother or sister and repent. Get right with them now while you’re still sucking air and get right with God. It’s just that simple.

Let’s end with this

The person who doesn’t love doesn’t know God, because God is love. (1 John 4:8)

If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother. (1 John 4:20-21 ESV)

So are you a hypocrite?

Those who can adapt do, but those who can’t become shipwrecked; never able to get beyond the implications the word brings to an already insecure being . What word could possibly do all that? The word is CHANGE! In a society that brags about change, that demands change, that sometimes does things for the sake of change, this seems quite a riddle but we all know it to be true. It is true there are those who are able to accept change better than others, but we all hate change when it effects us personally. Think about the last time you took a new position at work or perhaps a new job with a new company. The first few days of getting to know everyone, learning your way around, finding out what’s expected, the fear that you might do it wrong because no one is telling you anything and somehow you just knew they hired you because you should already know. Change is painful because it is the unknown. We all want our lives to go along smoothly without change, or at least, if change is going to come let it come as I want it. I want to be in control of whatever change happens in my life. Wouldn’t that be nice.

“Change is painful because it is the unknown”

Nice but not possible. Stop and think about what things you are actually in control of. If you’re realistic you’ll realize that you have no control of anything. You may decide to drive down Fourth St. to get to work but there may be an accident that forces you to Third. You say “well at least I can choose whether I go to work or not”. Really? Suppose you’re going down Third and your car stalls. You get out to call a tow truck. While you’re talking to the tow company a semi smashes into your car throwing it into a water filled ditch killing a family of swans. “But!”, you may protest. “I can call a cab and still go to work if I choose, so I am still in control”. But suppose you get to work and find the doors closed with a sign that says your company was closed by the IRS pending investigation. Do we still think we are in control? You see, that’s important because if we think we are in control we will be unable to accept change and we will break rather than bend to situations we face in life. Flexibility is our only defense against change as it will come whether we want it or not and whether we’re ready or not. The big question is, can you get ready for change and stay ready? Can you accept change and maybe even get to where you appreciate it? (I didn’t say like).

How many people have left a church because someone wanted to change something? I heard a story of a new pastor who wanted to take the churches old podium out and replace it with a smaller more elegant design. Many of the members protested. “That podium has been in this church for 40 years” they said, or “That’s been hear since before this church was a church, why it was hand made by Doc Harmon one of this town’s founding fathers”. The pastor was shocked. He had no idea it had that much history. Intrigued by these claims he decided to learn more, and learn he did. His search led him to a label on the inside, lower right panel, out of sight from anyone who wasn’t crawling on his hands and knees. Wiping off the label he discovered these words, “Made in China”. To these folks change was the enemy. They had gotten used to that podium and it had come to represent unchanging comfort to them and they were ready to defend a history that didn’t even exist.

Let me end with this picture I found on the internet at http://marcusavedis.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d3emuvh

It says it all

During my time as a pastor I’ve done a lot of marriage counseling and the most alarming trend I’ve seen is not unfaithfulness but disillusionment. As far as divorce is concerned, it appears from most polls that the divorce rate among professing, church going, Christian couples, is the same as that of nonbelievers. (I qualify that statement by saying that not all who profess to be church going Christians truly are, and although many polls show a decrease in divorces nationwide, this is partly due to the decrease in marriages) Nonetheless we know this to be at least a close account of what we’re seeing in our churches. Another surprising trend that I’m seeing is the number of Christian woman who are tossing in the towel and running off with other men or just running off. Although I’m not aware of any polls that show this trend, my guess is that women are leaving men almost 5 to 1. The reason? Disillusionment. While most Christian couples know that God hates divorce and that He wants us to have happy marriages we have become fixated on happiness. Don’t get me wrong, we can have happy marriages and God wants us to have happy marriages but as anyone who has been married more than a year knows, marriage is not always happy. Our problem is that we have redefined marriage to be equal to or at least dependent on happiness. We have rewritten the marriage vows to replace “as long as we both shall live” with “as long as I’m happy”. Happiness now defines “a good marriage”. In our society and even the body of Christ, we have bought and paid for the lie that says he/she should make me happy. We are self centered and convinced that nothing is more important than our happiness but that’s not what the Bible says. One need only read Matthew 5 to understand that our happiness only comes through times of testing. In that chapter the word “blessed” literally means happy.

I truly believe that we have become disillusioned. We no longer have a clear definition of marriage; that daily struggle to know another human being and to practice God’s love on an imperfect spouse. I believe the reason why many women are folding up and walking out is because they have been duped. They have been tricked by Hollywood into believing that there is someone out there that can sweep them off of their feet and offer them unending happiness. They are willing to cash in years of relationship to find that perfect man who, by the way, will never come. Our grandparents certainly understood something we’ve missed. Marriage is built on conflict and happiness comes only when we are willing to risk being unhappy. Their vows read “for better or worse, in sickness and in health, till death do us part, and as long as we both shall live”. You see they knew that happiness is not found in circumstance, it’s found in relationship. It doesn’t really matter who you’re married to. He may be a saint or a bum. You’re still going to have struggles, you’re still going to have difficulties, you’re still going to have to work at your relationship. But it’s in those times that you reap the most reward. Those times that you feel like leaving are the times you’re about ready to make a breakthrough. Stick with it, don’t give up. Get counseling. Read books. (“Love and Respect” by Emerson Eggerichs; “For Women Only” and “For Men Only” by Shaunti Feldhahn) But most of all remember that true happiness and joy comes only from God. Your husband/wife can’t meet all of your emotional needs. Only God can bring true fulfillment.

Blessings

No doubt you were drawn to it because it made no sense or at least it intrigued you enough to stop by and look into it. But don’t quit yet as I would love to take a little time and explain what it means. It goes like this.

Here we are, staring at the infant face of 2012. While many will look back on it as the “good ol’ days”, many will be glad to see 2011 go the way of all dead things. Maybe in a chest or some hard drive as a collection of pictures and music but buried nonetheless. I have to admit that 2011 will not go down in the books as my favorite year but I need to stop and ask myself some difficult questions. Did I learn anything? Did I make a difference? Did I impact anyone? Did I waste 365 days and do I now find myself on the verge of wasting another 365 days? You see, life is a funny thing. We always seem to have so much ahead of us that we never waste time looking back. But as you start seeing less and less time ahead, you tend to look at the past and wish you could get some of it back. We never seem to appreciate today because of our expectations for tomorrow or the regrets of our past. We all seem to be on a road driving as fast as we can to get somewhere but never really knowing where it is. Then one day we wake up and find out we must have passed it but there’s no way to turn around. And that, lady’s and gentlemen is a shame. For most of the good things in life only happen once. Right now you’re thinking that this is one of those “live life to the fullest” speeches. In a way I guess it is but that’s not my point. My point is that if we never look back on our mistakes, on our achievement, our failures or our victories, we will learn nothing. George Santayana said ”Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it”. This applies to all things including life. I can’t look back wishing or regretting otherwise I get stuck in the past and I let now slip away being added to the pile of regret. Paul said “Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead.” (Philippians 3:13) Paul was one who had a mountain of regret (he used to kill Christians before he met Jesus) but he says that he won’t look back at those things. Instead he would reach for the things that are ahead. He wouldn’t let his past steal his future or his now. So look back. Learn from the past but remember that there is nothing there for you anymore. Make the past your teacher not your warden. Remember you can’t go back. You can’t change one thing in the past but you can change the now and possibly the future.

Looking back is an art. Don’t get stuck there.

Driving around in my truck today I must have listened to the song a dozen times. It’s a song by the Christian group Third Day (my absolute favorite group on the planet and possibly the universe). It’s an old song that I’ve heard a million times before because it’s one of the few songs I still have on CD and it’s in my player as backup when the radio doesn’t have anything worth listening to. None of that matters except that it really got me thinking. The song is called ”I’ve always loved you”

I don’t know how to explain it

But I know that words will hardly do

Miracles with signs and wonders

Aren’t enough for me to prove to you

Don’t you know I’ve always loved you

Even before there was time

Though you turn away I’ll tell you still

Don’t you know I’ve always loved you And I always will

Greater love has not a man

Than the one who gives his life to prove

That he would do anything

And that’s what I’m going to do for you

Don’t you know I’ve always loved you

Even before there was time

Though you turn away I’ll tell you still

Don’t you know I’ve always loved you And I always will

This song is sung from Christ’s perspective who gave his life, the ultimate sacrifice, for you. The problem is that most people who have heard of God’s love never understand it. I guess most people think, for some misguided reason, that they’ve done something so bad, or maybe some “things” so bad, that even God can’t forgive them. You may know that God is love but you’ve convinced yourself that you’ve done one bad thing too many for God to see his way to grant you forgiveness. You have decided that you’re getting what you deserve and God is out to get you and maybe you’re living a hell on earth. You’ve convinced yourself you’re too bad for God. The Truth is that the Bible itself is full of “bad characters” who should never have had a relationship with God. Starting at the beginning, Adam and Eve threw it all away for an apple. Jacob was a perpetual liar. Moses a murderer. Rahab, who was a prostitute, would be the forerunner of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. David, a murderer and an adulterer, suffered the loss of a child because of his sin. There was Matthew who made his living by extorting money from the people he loved. He was a tax collector when Jesus called him to be a disciple. There was the woman at the well who had been in several relationships, none of which brought her happiness. There was a woman who was caught in the very act of adultery, punishable by death, whom Jesus forgave and said ” neither do I condemn you, go and sin no more” . Don’t forget the thief on the cross next to Jesus who spent his entire life hating God and doing wrong. His crimes were bad enough to warrant the death penalty. Yet Jesus said to him ” this day you will be with me in Paradise”.

Then to end our list there was the apostle Paul, responsible for the death of many who professed to be followers of Christ. He said I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love which Christ Jesus our Lord shows us. We can’t be separated by death or life, by angels or rulers, by anything in the present or anything in the future, by forces or powers in the world above or in the world below, or by anything else in creation. (Rom 8:38-39 GW) The thing is, nothing you can do or even all the things you have done can stop God from loving you, which means he’s on your side wanting to forgive you. Take it from me, someone who rebelled against God knowingly, not caring who I hurt. There were a lot of casualties of my selfish, uncaring, lifestyle. I hated life and hated God for the life I had. I tried to find something other than God to fill a hole that could never be filled by another human being. Like the woman at the well, relationships would never satisfy a deep desire for love, God’s love.

So, if you think you’re too bad for God, think again. God loves you even if you don’t love yourself. He is waiting for you to reach out to Him. You know it and yet you hold back. Stop punishing yourself and let God do what He does best, restoring lives. It’s time. He has always loved you and he always will.

In Christ

Kevin

We hear a lot about anger these days. Our society is absolutely rampant with it but you don’t have to take my word for it. Just try stepping in front of someone in line at any fast food place or if you care little about your personal safety try the same trick at any Wal Mart, Sears or Salvation Army at Christmas. It seems every year someone is attacked, trampled or otherwise assaulted at Christmas. What’s wrong with us? The Apostle Paul said:

You must understand this: In the last days there will be violent periods of time. People will be selfish and love money. They will brag, be arrogant, and use abusive language. They will curse their parents, show no gratitude, have no respect for what is holy, and lack normal affection for their families. They will refuse to make peace with anyone. They will be slanderous, lack self-control, be brutal, and have no love for what is good. They will be traitors. They will be reckless and conceited. They will love pleasure rather than God. (2 Timothy 3:1-4)

Does that sound familiar?

This is where we live; in a society absolutely plagued with self-worship. And with that self-worship comes anger because I become the most important person on the planet, nay… the universe!

Ephesians 4:26 says “Be angry without sinning.” At first glance this may seem very strange but we need to understand that the anger Paul is speaking of comes from a righteous or “approved by God” anger. You see we are called to be passive when it comes to harm done to us. It was Jesus who said to turn the other cheek when someone strikes us. Jesus’ life exemplified this as Jesus never tried to defend himself before man, at least not in anger. But if you wanted to crank him up, all you had to do was use, abuse or exploit another human being and he was all over it. When addressing the religious leaders of the day Jesus said…and I quote; ”Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness. (Matthew 23:27) Their crime? Making it too difficult to reach God. They had made so many rules that no one could get to God without going through them, and it would cost you. These guys were rich because they actually sold access to God, and Jesus being God, would have none of it.

Speaking of the Scribes he said “They rob widows by taking their houses and then say long prayers to make themselves look good. The scribes will receive the most severe punishment.” (Mark 12:40)

Jesus often displayed ”righteous anger” on behalf of others but never on his own behalf. So the question is, do we ever get angry with a righteous anger? Are we ever really cranked up when someone else is being abused or taken advantage of? Do we get upset when a pastor, teacher or church makes it almost impossible to reach God through rules and impossible to obey regulations? Are we willing to fight for what is right or are we only willing to fight for what is ours? I wonder…

Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful. (1 Corinthians 4:2 NKJV)

Long, long ago in a land far away there was a day when a man’s word was better than any written contract. There was a day when people did what they said they were going to do and we didn’t have to wonder if they meant what they said. For example, if someone said they were going to help you build a barn, they actually helped you build a barn. Today it’s much different. Someone can look you in the eye and swear on Santa’s grave that they will do something and guess what?; there is no obligation to follow through, no standard of ethics by which they will be deemed untrustworthy by their peers and thus bringing disgrace on their name. Unfaithfulness has become the norm. You can’t trust any one to do what they commit to doing. This is the case across the board in Little League, Bowling League, and in every area of society, including church. This is a bold statement I know. After all, Christians are supposed to be more trustworthy, more honorable, more dependable than the world. We are to set the standard of faithfulness and trustworthiness. To us as believers, these should be qualities that set us apart from the world. We should charish, uphold, and defend them when necessary. “Our word should be our bond”. But sadly this too has been set aside as unnecessary and antiquated. A verbal committment is as useless as confederate money.

Mae West once said “An ounce of preformance is worth pounds of promises” yet so many today do not follow through on their promises. What does God think of that?

Psalm 15:1-4 says “A Psalm of David. LORD, who may abide in Your tabernacle? Who may dwell in Your holy hill? He who walks uprightly, And works righteousness, And speaks the truth in his heart; He who does not backbite with his tongue, Nor does evil to his neighbor, Nor does he take up a reproach against his friend; In whose eyes a vile person is despised, But he honors those who fear the LORD; He who swears to his own hurt and does not change”

Ethics! That’s what David is saying. The man who is honest with his brother…who swears (makes a promise) and keeps his word even if he finds out later that he will be hurt by it.

Matthew 5:33-37 “You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, ‘Never break your oath, but give to the Lord what you swore in an oath to give him.’ But I tell you don’t swear an oath at all. Don’t swear an oath by heaven, which is God’s throne, or by the earth, which is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, which is the city of the great King. And don’t swear an oath by your head. After all, you cannot make one hair black or white. Simply say yes or no. Anything more than that comes from the evil one.”

”But Jesus said don’t swear at all”. True but this is not a promise as in our Psalm passage, but an oath. You see people lack integrity and generally find it helpful to swear on something sacred to show that their word can be trusted, such as swearing on one’s mother’s grave. The Jews did this all the time. They would swear by the Temple or the gold in the Temple as if God would strike them dead if they were lying. I can think of no story in the Bible of God striking anyone dead for breaking an oath. Jesus is saying that we shouldn’t have to swear, our word should be all anyone needs. If I have to swear on a stack of Bibles to get people to believe me, my word is trash and I’m a liar.

If we are to be holy like God is holy let’s see what the Bible says about God.

Keep in mind that the LORD your God is the only God. He is a faithful God, who keeps his promise and is merciful to thousands of generations of those who love him and obey his commands. (Deuteronomy 7:9)

O LORD, your mercy reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies. (Psalms 36:5)

Don’t be like the world. Set the standard for faithfulness. Do what you say your going to do but think about what you’re committing to before you commit.

Pay attention to this! You’re saying, “Today or tomorrow we will go into some city, stay there a year, conduct business, and make money.” You don’t know what will happen tomorrow. What is life? You are a mist that is seen for a moment and then disappears. Instead, you should say, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and carry out our plans.” (James 4:13-15)

What’s the point?

1. Don’t make promises you can’t keep. It’s always good to use words like “if I can” or “do my best”. Let the person know he shouldn’t count on you.

2. But there are things that are more important than what you’ve got going. (I know that’s hard to believe) When you do promise, (you’ve given “your word”), keep the promise…even if you are hurt by it.

3. Remember that people should see Christ in you all the time.

In Christ

Pride precedes a disaster, and an arrogant attitude precedes a fall. Better to be humble with lowly people than to share stolen goods with arrogant people.

(Proverbs 16:18-19 GW)

It wasn’t long after the flood that man’s heart began to be lifted up. They were a powerful and resourceful people able to do anything they set their minds to. Having been freed from the wickedness that was prominent on the earth, they were now free to populate and expand once again. God had spared mankind from certain doom by saving only Noah and his family, and most species of animals, from a flood which the Bible says covered the whole earth. This small remnant of the human race was free to serve God in their new environment with a new understanding of His saving grace and awesome power. But Noah’s descendants chose instead to be proud.

The whole world had one language with a common vocabulary. As people moved toward the east, they found a plain in Shinar [Babylonia] and settled there. They said to one another, “Let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used bricks as stones and tar as mortar. Then they said, “Let’s build a city for ourselves and a tower with its top in the sky. Let’s make a name for ourselves so that we won’t become scattered all over the face of the earth.” (Genesis 11:1-4 GW)

These were no ordinary people. God said of them “They are one people with one language. This is only the beginning of what they will do! Now nothing they plan to do will be too difficult for them”(Genesis 11:6 GW). This is what I believe they may have had in mind.

With the memory of the flood still fresh in their minds (only 100 years or so) and the command to be fruitful and (re)populate the earth (Gen 9:1), they had decided it might serve them better if they stayed right where they were, building a civilization in a fertile plain in Shinar or modern-day Iraq, or more specifically, Babylon. It would be a glorious civilization complete with wonders, marvels, and scientific breakthrough, and no doubt, luxury and pleasure. The only problem was God’s command to populate the earth. They needed to fan out for obvious reasons, one being that we humans tend to gobble up resources, and two being that we tend to encourage each other to sin. So this resourceful group developed a plan to disobey God and yet keep from being smitten by a flood ever again. They would build a tower which would reach into heaven, higher than the level of the flood water that had destroyed their ancestors. It would serve to protect them if God were to bring rain waters on them again. So to that end they baked bricks and began constructing this tower, sealing it with tar to water-proof it from the flood they fully expected to come upon them because of their disobedience. (It’s almost funny what we will do to protect our sin.) This would be man’s greatest achievement since Noah built the ark and would be a monument to mankind and his genius. Once and for all they would be rid of God and all His commands. He could never again destroy them with rain water, or fire for that matter, they would surely prosper. After all weren’t they nearly gods in that there was nothing they could not do? And they would certainly do it.

We know the rest of the story in that God confused their language and sent them on their merry way, and the tower project was abandoned. Unable to communicate, these men were forced to leave the plain in Shinar and populate the globe the way God had commanded them in the first place. It was called Babel which means confusion. I think it’s ironic that all of man’s extraordinary achievements and all his wisdom and knowledge amount to nothing more than confusion when measured up against an all-knowing, omnipotent, God. So much for man’s genius and ingenuity. So much for being god-like. In one day and possibly one minute, God had confounded the plans and the combined knowledge of the human race…again.

But, you see, man hasn’t really given up on that tower. Oh we may not be building it as a group but we build nonetheless. Every time I allow pride to enter my thoughts. Every time I listen to Satan tell me how wonderful I am and how smart I am. When I begin to think that I am wise beyond my years and God is so blessed to have me. Every time I allow Satan to flatter me, to woo me, to build my ego, I put another brick in the Tower of Babel being erected in my heart. Paul says

But God chose what the world considers nonsense to put wise people to shame. God chose what the world considers weak to put what is strong to shame. God chose what the world considers ordinary and what it despises-what it considers to be nothing-in order to destroy what it considers to be something. As a result, no one can brag in God’s presence. (1 Corinthians 1:27-29 GW)

So how can I stop the building process? How can I keep from buying into Satan’s deception?

I must remember that I am nothing without God. As far as the world is concerned I am foolish, weak, and completely ordinary. That’s why God chose me; not because of my “extra specialness”.

I must resist flattery. Jesus said “Woe to you when all men speak well of you, For so did their fathers to the false prophets”. (Luke 6:26 ) and Proverbs 29:5 says “ A person who flatters his neighbor is spreading a net for him to step into”. (GW)

I must remember that if there is any good in me, it’s only because of God. Paul understood this. “For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells” (Romans 7:18). There is nothing in me to be proud of. No one can brag in God’s presence.

“Lord, help me to understand who I am. Help me to see that I am nothing without you and although people will try to flatter me, I must resist the temptation to become proud. To You be the glory and the power forever! Amen.”

“But concerning brotherly love you have no need that I should write to you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another; and indeed you do so toward all the brethren who are in all Macedonia. But we urge you, brethren, that you increase more and more; that you also aspire to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you, that you may walk properly toward those who are outside, and that you may lack nothing.” (1 Thessalonians 4:9-12 NKJV)

Close your eyes for a moment and imagine a world where love is something to be given rather than expected. A world where it truly is more blessed to give than receive. In this world you are imagining, you are always loved and accepted, no one ever has a harsh word of criticism. Even when you don’t perform the way you should, people still love and encourage you. In this world no one pry’s into your affairs. They never judge you because of your failures and they don’t hold you to impossible standards. They just love you. No one cares if you are a little cranky. No one cares if you cry too much. No one cares that you aren’t perfect. Love is freely given with no strings attached.

Of course when you open your eyes you find that the world isn’t like this at all. People aren’t so amiable and forgiving. They do judge; they do hold a grudge and they do hold you to impossible standards. But what about you and me? You see it’s God who teaches us to love. It’s His standard we must achieve and hold to. His standards aren’t impossible because it isn’t us who does it; it’s the Holy Spirit. He lives in us, works through us, to love and forgive and to accept others despite their shortcomings. But Paul urges us to increase, excel,or as 1 Corinthians 14:1 puts it, pursue love. So what are we to do?

1. Lead a quiet life-We aren’t to draw attention to ourselves. There are so many people who draw attention to themselves by being in the middle of trouble. Whenever there is discord you can be sure you will find them.

2. Mind our own business- “Curiosity killed the cat”. It’s interesting that many species of fish are caught by there curiosity in the bait not because of their hunger.

3. Keep busy working to provide for ourselves

While we were with you, we gave you the order: “Whoever doesn’t want to work shouldn’t be allowed to eat.” We hear that some of you are not living disciplined lives. You’re not working, so you go around interfering in other people’s lives. We order and encourage such people by the Lord Jesus Christ to pay attention to their own work so they can support themselves. (2 Thessalonians 3:10-12 GW)

The old saying goes “idle hands are the workshop of the Devil”. Don’t be idle! Concentrate on your job, your family, your ministry. Paul said “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling” not the salvation of others. We find Jesus in Luke 2:49 (as the LITV puts it) “busy in the affairs of (His) father”. Are we busy in the affairs of our father or are we busy in the affairs of others? You can be free to love and not judge only by refusing to be in a position where you will be called upon to judge. Keep busy about your Father’s business and you will live a happy life and “your way of life will win respect from those outside the church, and you won’t have to depend on anyone else for what you need”.

We found Mike sitting on a street corner crying into his hands wondering why life had taken such a sharp turn in the wrong direction. At 20 years old, he now found himself living in a tent by the river with no job, no money and nowhere to turn for help and comfort. Having been expelled from his family because of drinking and drugs he was now at the bottom with no place to go but up. Frankly, this may have been the best thing to ever happen to Mike. Over the next couple months Mike made Jesus Christ his Lord and Savior, repenting of his sins and showing visible signs of change. Mike never asked for money, not even when Dave found him that day on the street. All he ever wanted was peace, and God gave that to him. God began to pour out blessings on Mike like I’ve never seen before. Within days of his recieving his new life, Mike didn’t get one job but two. Within the month he moved out of his tent into an RV that kept him warm and dry. As long as I knew Mike, and I had quite a bit of contact with him, he never complained, never said anything negative about anyone and never demanded a thing. He was always smiling, even more so now that he was at peace with God. He wasn’t bitter at his family or God and blamed no one but himself for where he was in life. If you knew Mike, you would agree that you wouldn’t meet a kinder more appreciative soul. God said in Isaiah 55:9;

”For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

We can’t know why God chose to take Mike home to heaven a couple of days ago but this may just be the second greatest act of mercy God could bestow on any man or woman.

Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.(Psalms 116:15)

See you in heaven Mike
